Dark Mode settings are an important element to bear in mind when creating your emails. Colours that could look beautiful in regular settings - can completely alter in dark mode, ruining the overall aesthetic experience for your audience! And it's not only text that can be affected, images can be too. Below we have included some tips to get the best out of your emails.

Logos / Images / Icons

In the below images, you can see that the AIRSHIP logo blends in to the dark mode background. This has happened because the image has a transparent background, the logo is black and the email background changes to black in dark mode settings.

Regular settings Dark Mode

In this image below, around the AIRSHIP logo I have added a white outline around the logo itself. Doing this makes it so, when a viewer is viewing the email within regular settings - the logo looks as it should, and when viewing it in dark mode the logo is now visible and separate from the background.

Adding a background to your image / logo can also avoid your image blending in to the background on dark mode.

Although doing the above with your images can create an unintended separation between the flow of text and your images, making the email look blocky, especially if there are images included in between the text of your email.

To avoid this from happening - you can add a background to your text and then upload it as an image into the email builder.

Text Colours

Text colours are something to also consider when creating your emails.
Vibrant colours in regular settings can become dull and less impactful in dark mode.
Black text will turn to white and coloured text could become dull in dark mode.

In the image below you can see how vibrant the text colours are viewing the email in regular settings but not when viewed in dark mode. This is an important thing to remember when choosing the colour of your text and also if you plan to highlight any text within your email.

You can apply all of these ideas to any part of your email to make sure your emails are optimised in both regular & dark mode. If you'd like any more help with this get in touch with our team on success@airship.co.uk
