Where to find your metrics ๐
Your metrics are managed from the Manage Metrics page, which you'll find inside Performance Dashboard.
On the Manage metrics page you'll see two tabs:
Active Metrics - all the metrics currently in use
Archived Metrics - metrics you've put away but haven't deleted
What is a metric? ๐ค
Before we get into the details, let's quickly explain what a Metric is. ๐
A metric is a number or chart that tracks something specific about your business.
For example, you might set up a metric to track:
How many guests visited last week
How your email open rate is trending
How your loyalty tiers are shifting over time
Metrics live as tiles on your Performance Dashboard, so you can see everything that matters to you in one place.
When you first get access, your dashboard comes with several metrics already set up for you. You can add more, archive ones you don't need, and rename them to match how your team talks.
Adding a metric to your dashboard โ
There are two ways to add a metric to your Performance Dashboard.
From the Manage metrics page
Find the metric you want under the Manage metrics button located on the Performance dashboard.
Click the โฎ (three dots) menu on the right, and choose Add to Performance Dashboard.
The metric tile will appear at the bottom of your dashboard straight away.
From the Performance Dashboard itself
Click the + Add metric button at the top of the dashboard. You'll see two options:
Select existing metric - pick from the metrics you've already set up
Create new metric - build a brand new one with the help of Ask Airship
Selecting an existing metric ๐
Click + Add metric then Select existing metric and a pop up will appear that let's you select a metric.
When you select a metric click the blue "Add to dashboard". You'll now see your metric appear at the bottom of the Performance dashboard page.
Creating a new metric ๐ฅณ
Click + Add metric then Create new metric and a panel will open on the right of your screen.
Describe what you'd like to track (just say it in plain English). A few examples to get you started:
"How many customers visited last month?"
"Show me email open rate over the last 90 days"
Airship AI will ask you a few follow-up questions to make sure it builds the right metric for you. Once it's ready, you'll see a preview before it's added to your dashboard.
The metric is saved to your Metrics library automatically, so you can always find it again later even if you remove it from the dashboard.
๐ง Idea - use Ask Airship
If you want some ideas for metrics, just use Ask Airship on the dashboard sidebar.
Prompt it with this question: "What metrics are good as a marketeer to know about?" or something like that. ๐
Renaming a metric โ๏ธ
If the name Ask Airship gave a metric doesn't match how your team talks, you can change it.
Find the metric in your Metrics library, click the โฎ menu, and choose Rename.
Type the new name and confirm. The name updates on the dashboard tile too.
Archiving a metric ๐๏ธ
If you no longer need a metric, you can archive it rather than deleting it permanently.
Find the metric in your Metrics library, click the โฎ menu, and choose Archive.
The metric moves to your Archived Metrics tab and is removed from your dashboard. If you change your mind, you can find it in the Archived tab and restore it.
๐ก Good to know: Archiving a metric doesn't delete any of the underlying data. It just tidies it out of your active list.
What's the difference between a metric and a segment? ๐ค
A segment is a group of people who meet a set of criteria - for example, "guests who've visited 2-3 times." Segments update automatically overnight as guests come and go.
A metric turns that into something you can track over time. It takes the count from a segment (or from another data source like your email stats) and plots it as a chart so you can see trends, spot changes, and understand what's happening with your business.
Think of it this way: a segment tells you who - a metric tells you how many, over time.
